WHAT DO THE CHILDREN DO AT SCHOOL?

Our curriculum is based on active learning through play in a variety of interest centers.  Active learning is learning by doing; investigating new things, problem solving, experimenting and exploration.  When touring the classrooms, the different interest areas can be observed.  Some interest areas are:  math and science center, dramatic play area, writing center, sand and water table, small manipulatives, and an art area.  The teachers develop unit themes and then incorporate the theme into as many interest centers as possible.  During  "freechoice" time (which we feel is the most important), children are actively involved with their peers, moving freely and experimenting with activities and materials.  Teachers encourage language (speaking and listening), literacy development, and, most importantly, pro-social behaviors.  Cultural diversity is integrated into our daily activities. 

There are opportunities for large and small group times.  During large group times children are involved in activities such as the daily news, Big Bear "star of the week", greeting each other, music and movement time, playground/gym or listening/participating in storytime.  During these large group times children are encouraged to become involved, feel comfortable in a group and applaud the efforts of others.  At small group times such as art or activity time, children will be encouraged to participate but will not be forced.

There is a Christian atmosphere and philosophy in the school.  We will focus on the Christian religious aspects of holidays throughout the year, as well as praying before snack.  Christian teaching is an integral part of the program; we ask that our families be completely comfortable with this aspect of the school's program.  Enrollment is open to all children regardless of race, creed, color, sex, religion, or national origin.
